BUENA VISTA, VA (May 2025)— Together we built it, together we NAMED it, the City of Buena Vista is proud to unveil the new name of what has been temporarily called the “Town Square”. After a citywide vote, Magnolia Square emerged as the favorite among the three finalists—Green Valley Junction, Magnolia Square, and Picadilly Commons.

The name Magnolia Square draws inspiration from its location on Magnolia Avenue and the enduring character of the magnolia tree. It reflects the charm, values, and aspirations of Buena Vista, envisioning the space as a welcoming place where the community can come together, celebrate, and make lasting memories together.

This milestone is the result of a true community effort, with residents contributing name ideas rooted in local history and personal stories, and coming together to vote and decide on a name that will represent this vibrant new chapter in our city.

“We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who took part in this process and helped shape this important chapter in our story,” said Kristina Ramsey, Director of Economic Development. “Your input has been invaluable in creating a space that truly belongs to all of us.”

As part of the transformation of Magnolia Square, the City, has partnered with Main Street Buena Vista and Rockbridge Area Health Center on a vibrant outdoor mural that proudly features the new name. Completed this week, the mural captures the essence of the region’s natural landscape and outdoor lifestyle.

Painted by Covington-based artist Cheyenne Renne, the mural features several outdoor elements such as, the Blue Ridge Mountains, a kayaker on the river, different types of birds, blooming magnolia flowers and a hiker gazing out over the valley. Bold colors and flowing imagery bring the scene to life, bringing the previously blank wall into a dynamic visual landmark.

Cheyenne Renne, who is on a personal mission to paint a mural in all 50 states, was selected for her nature-driven style and community-focused approach to public art.

“This mural brings together everything we love about Buena Vista- our outdoor beauty, our active lifestyle, and now, a powerful sense of place in Magnolia Square,” said Jen Carpenter, Main Street Buena Vista Executive Director.

Together, the new name and mural reflect the heart of downtown Buena Vista—honoring the area’s natural beauty, celebrating community identity, and setting the tone for an inviting and vibrant public space. As Magnolia Square continues to take shape, the City invites residents and visitors alike to enjoy a place where art, nature, and community come together in meaningful ways.

More developments in the square will continue to come, so stay tuned for updates as the project progresses and follow the City of Buena Vista- Economic Development on social media to see the progress unfold.
