Public Works Driver

The City of Buena Vista is seeking an energetic individual to serve in the city's Public Works department; employees are the core of City government. General Purpose:
General supervision and work assignments are received from a foreman, or the Director of Public Works, who also reviews work through observation and investigation of customer complaints. Performs heavy manual work in the collection of residential and commercial refuse on an assigned route. This position is an hourly paid position and thus is subject to Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines.
Example of Duties:
- Operates mechanisms for loading, compressing, and dumping refuse and garbage
- Safely manages all movement of refuse truck in alleys, driveways, etc.
- Operates truck as required
- Inspects truck equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil, water and all fluids and performs pre and post trip inspections
- Operate and run routes for garbage pickup
- Picks up and empties garbage and refuse in its proper collection containers
- Empties containers into refuse truck
- Picks up other debris and places in truck
- Assists in periodic washing and cleaning of refuse truck
- Assists with snow removal
- Performs related work as required
Minimum/Preferred Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Certified Driver’s License Required
- Graduation from High School or equivalent (GED)
- At least six months experience in heavy manual work
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to perform strenuous physical work for extended periods of time and to periodically pass a medical examination for heavy manual work
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and customers

WASTEWATER PLANT POSITION
The City of Buena Vista is accepting applications for the position of Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator.
This position works under supervision and includes operating the wastewater plant and equipment used to collect, treat, and dispose of domestic and industrial sewage efficiently in accordance with regulatory requirements and monitoring operations to determine treatment plant efficiency and quality. Requires lifting, performing routine semi-skilled and technical work. Position requires on-call, weekends and holiday work as needed.
A high school diploma or equivalent and a valid VA driver’s license are required. At least a Class IV Wastewater license issued by the state of Virginia is desired but trainees will be considered. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY – Police Officer
Job Description/Responsibilities:
The Buena Vista Police Department is seeking applicants interested in a rewarding career in professional law enforcement. Officers take responsibility for the enforcement of laws and ordinances pursuant to the City of Buena Vista, State, and Federal Governments, as well as providing assistance to the public. Officers are subjected to hazardous and life-threatening situations and must maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
Additionally, officers will patrol designated areas of the City of Buena Vista to preserve law and order and to prevent and discover the commission of crime, to direct traffic, and to enforce motor vehicle laws. As directed, they will answer calls and complaints involving suspicious and criminal activities, domestic disputes, and other related citizen requests for service. Each officer shall be responsible for maintaining records, reports and all other duties as assigned.
Salary & Benefits
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience ranging between $40,047 - $46,874. Preference will be given to DCJS certified officers.
Minimal Qualifications Include:
- High school graduate or GED certification
- Must be 21 years of age;

- No convictions of felonies or crimes involving moral turpitude or domestic violence;
- Must not have been released or discharged under dishonorable conditions from any U.S. Military Services.

Summary:
