Employment Opportunity: Police Officer
Job Description/Responsibilities:
The Buena Vista Police Department is seeking applicants interested in a rewarding career in professional law enforcement. Officers take responsibility for the enforcement of laws and ordinances pursuant to the City of Buena Vista, State, and Federal Governments, as well as providing assistance to the public. Officers are subjected to hazardous and life threatening situations and must maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
Additionally, officers will patrol designated areas of the City of Buena Vista to preserve law and order and to prevent and discover the commission of crime, to direct traffic, and to enforce motor vehicle laws. As directed, they will answer calls and complaints involving suspicious and criminal activities, domestic disputes, and other related citizen requests for service. Each officer shall be responsible for maintaining records, reports and all other duties as assigned.
Salary & Benefits
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience starting at $40,047. Benefits include educational incentives through tuition reimbursement and annual bonus for those looking to further their education; retirement VSRS, LEO; Uniforms and Equipment furnished; Health and Life Insurance; Paid Holidays. Preference will be given to DCJS certified officers.
Minimal Qualifications Include:
- High school graduate or GED certification
- Must be 21 years of age;
- Possess a valid Virginia driver’s license;
- Must be a citizen of the United States or possess permanent resident status as granted by the I.N.S.
- No convictions of felonies or crimes involving moral turpitude or domestic violence.
- Must not have been released or discharged under dishonorable conditions from any U.S. Military Services.

Job Description/Responsibilities:
The Buena Vista Public Works Department is seeking individuals interested in serving on our Street and Sanitation Crews.
- The Street Crew maintains and repairs public streets, traffic signage and lights, storm drainage systems and other city facilities.
- The Sanitations Crew is responsible for collecting and disposing of both residential and commercial garbage and brush.
Salary & Benefits
Salary is based on qualifications and experience.
Benefits include medical insurance options with the City paying up to 80% of the monthly premium and enrollment into the Virginia Retirement System.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The City of Buena Vista, VA, is seeking a dedicated and versatile Marketing and Administration Assistant to join our Economic Development Office. Reporting directly to the Economic Development Director, this individual will play a pivotal role in enhancing the city's marketing and communication efforts, supporting administrative tasks, and contributing to the overall economic development strategy. This position is a full-time salaried position.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Marketing and Communications:
- Develop engaging content for social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) to promote City-wide and economic development initiatives and events.
- Ensure regular updates and maintenance of the City website to provide accurate and timely information to residents, businesses, and visitors.
- Create visually appealing graphics, videos, and other multimedia content to enhance the online presence of the City.
- Coordinate with various departments and stakeholders to gather content and updates for dissemination across various platforms.
- Assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy to enhance transparency and promote the City of Buena Vista as an attractive destination for businesses, investors, and visitors.
- Administrative Support:
- Provide comprehensive administrative support to the Economic Development Director to ensure smooth daily operations.
- Perform various tasks including answering and directing phone calls, responding to inquiries, managing office communications, coordinating mailings, and maintaining filing systems.
- Assist in the preparation of presentations, reports, and promotional materials.
- Coordinate and schedule meetings, appointments, and events.
- Support the planning and execution of special projects, initiatives, and events.
- Provide general administrative support to the Community Development department and other departments, as directed.
- Perform other administrative tasks as assigned to support the efficient operation of the office.
- Collaborative Initiatives and Outreach:
- Collaborate with other City departments and external organizations to support projects and initiative, as directed.
- Participate in meetings, workshops, and events related to economic development and community engagement.
- Serve as a first liaison between the Economic Development Office and local businesses, community organizations, and government agencies, fostering positive relationships and partnerships.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Graduation from high school or a GED; some post-secondary education preferred.
- Education and/or experience in digital marketing, content creation, and social media management desired.
- Familiarity with content creation tools, website management platforms (e.g., WordPress), and social media analytics tools.
- Proficiency in operating computer databases, mobile apps, and Microsoft Office products
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a keen attention to detail..
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively.

Finance Director
Salary: $65,000 - $85,000
JOB OVERVIEW
The City of Buena Vista, VA, is seeking a dedicated and versatile Finance Director to join our leadership team! Reporting directly to the City Manager, this individual will play a key role in shaping the financial landscape of the City, ensuring fiscal responsibility and sustainability. This position performs complex professional work, planning, and directing all aspects of financial activities for the City and various other local public agencies; oversees the annual budget process; ensures transparency and successful external audits; and manages all departmental staff.
DUTIES
- Provide strategic leadership guidance in financial planning, budgeting, general accounting, accounts payable, payroll, forecasting processes, pension/plan retirement administration and real estate and procurement.
- Oversee the management of the city’s financial assets, investments, capital improvements and debt portfolio.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal financial regulations and reporting requirements.
- Direct the development and implementation of financial policies, procedures, and controls to safeguard city assets.
- Oversee procurement for all departments and develop and maintain procurement policies, procedures, and templates.
- Collaborate with the City Manager, executive leadership team and elected officials to develop sound fiscal policies and procedures to support the city’s strategic goals.
- Manage relationships with external auditors, financial advisors, and other stakeholders to maintain the city’s bond rating.
- Needs to be organized and have close attention to detail.
- Sometimes it is needed to prepare and deliver presentations for council meetings and public bodies. Public speaking experience is a plus.
- Ability to communicate complex financial information in an understandable manner to non-financial stakeholders.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, public administration, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Five years of progressive experience in municipal finance, including supervisory experience.
- Excellent analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience working with bond issuance, debt management, and investment strategies preferred.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) designation a plus.
