Boards & Commissions

Although City Council is the governing body of the City of Buena Vista, there are multiple boards, commissions, authorities, and committees that focus on specific issues. These volunteer entities, some of which are local and some of which are regional, perform important work advancing the Rockbridge area.

Buena Vista Board of Zoning Appeals

There is an upcoming opening on the Buena Vista BZA. This term will be effective January 1, 2026, and will expire on December 31, 2030. You must be a citizen of Buena Vista to qualify for this opening.

The board’s responsibilities consist of hearing and deciding appeals of zoning determinations and decisions. If an individual believes that a determination made by the Zoning Administrator, or a decision reached by the Planning Commission, is incorrect, they may appeal the decision to the Board of Zoning Appeals

Rockbridge Area Recreation Organization - RARO

There is a Buena Vista seat open on the Rockbridge Area Recreation Organization Board. This term will be effective immediately upon appointment and will expire on December 31, 2027. You must be a citizen of Buena Vista to qualify for this opening.

RARO is a non-profit, educational-athletic organization. The board is in charge of the management of the property and affairs of RARO. The board employs an Executive Director, and is responsible for the oversight of said Director, and shall review the budget set forth by the Executive Director prior to submission of the budget.

Maury Service Authority

There is a Buena Vista seat open on the Maury Service Authority Board. This term will be effective immediately upon appointment and will expire on May 31, 2029. You must be a citizen of Buena Vista to qualify for this opening.

The MSA whole sales services of water treatment and wastewater treatment. The MSA began the services of water treatment in 1975 and wastewater treatment in 1999.  Today, the MSA owns and operates the Maury Service Authority Water Treatment Plant and the Lexington-Rockbridge Regional Water Quality Control Facility.
