Community Garden to Host Timber Frame Pavilion Build This Fall

Kristina RamseyNews

The Buena Vista Community Garden, an independent non-profit 501(c)(3), will soon add a new pavilion to its space at 1704 Magnolia Avenue. The project is being carried out by the Community Garden in partnership with the VMI Timber Framers, and will culminate in a public hand-raising of the timber frame structure October 9-12, 2025.

While the City of Buena Vista celebrated two timber frame projects downtown last year, the Community Garden is now taking on its very own project. This build is organized independently by the Community Garden and its volunteers, giving the community another chance to come together and be part of something special. The land is owned by the City, but the Garden is fully managed and brought to life by local residents, partners, and supporters.

About the Buena Vista Community Garden

The Buena Vista Community Garden is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization established on land that was flooded in 1969 by Hurricane Camille. Though the land is owned by the City of Buena Vista, the garden itself is an independent, community-led project. It is maintained by volunteers and supported through donations, partnerships, and the active involvement of residents.

The garden is a space where people can grow food, exchange knowledge, build friendships, and enjoy nature together.

Why It Matters
The Buena Vista Community Garden creates opportunities for dignity and self-sufficiency. Participants can grow food for themselves and others while contributing to local food security. Locally grown vegetables and herbs provide nutrition and flavor—free from pesticides and herbicides. Together, we shall all learn and love nature.

Experience the Garden
The Community Garden is more than a growing space—it’s a place to:

  • Taste, experience, and learn.
  • Read, eat, meet, enjoy friends, and relax in the garden atmosphere.
  • Take part in nutrition classes, crafts and music, nature studies, drying/curing demonstrations, and free plant exchanges.

Ways to Participate
Your ideas and participation are needed and welcome! Community members and groups are invited to contribute by:

  • Establishing pollinator habitats or bird houses.
  • Starting a heirloom garden or a colorful garden celebrating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
  • Hosting a book exchange box, tool lending, a log book for hikers and visitors, or a dry goods exchange box for those in need.
